MMA in Savannah

Our company has been in operation in Beaufort SC since 1997. We feel that the Savannah has many people that can benefit from our instruction. Savannah Martial Arts Academy offers the same style of teaching and the same level of instruction, just at a new location.

We are a family owned and operated business located in Savannah, GA. This is a mixed martial arts school which teaches a mixture of Boxing, Kickboxing, Karate, Jui-jitsu, and Sambo. As a mixed-martial arts school, we appreciate the benefits of learning for competition, but also see the realistic need for self-defense for men, women, and children. Therefore, we present our techniques in a realistic and easy-to-learn method.

Classes are affordable and accessible to most people, so please contact us as soon as possible with any question or comments.

Our Style: Zanshindo

Our curricullum is based on the McCullough Submission Fighting program of Zanshindo. For those of you who may not know, Zanshindo is a mixed martial arts style. We call it this because we combine various techniques of other effective martial arts into a more complete martial art. This is not saying that some styles are lacking in greatness. It is just a way of mixing the best attributes from many good styles. For example, there is hardly any ground defense in martial arts such as Karate or Tae Kwon Do. So what happens if you are wrestled to the ground? Big trouble. So, by filling in the gaps of karate and tae kwon do with jujitsu and judo, we arrive at a more complete martial art. Zanshindo.

Zanshindo is the martial art founded by William McCullough after many years of training under numerous martial artists. The school he began in 1997 is still in service, but new owners and instructors have taken the helm of this great martial art and a few changes have evolved with them.

At Savannah Martial Arts Academy, we combine several major styles into a more complete martial art. These individual styles include:

  • Boxing
  • Kickboxing
  • Karate
  • Judo
  • Jiu Jitsu
  • Sambo
  • Wrestling

All of these styles are great in their own rights for competition and each has its own place and purpose; but combined, they add more tools to your self-defense arsenal which will guarantee victory in an attack.

Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed Martial Arts is a general style of martial arts that combines different styles of martial arts similar to what we teach at McCullough Submission Fighting. Mixed Martial Arts is commonly referred to as MMA especially in a sports setting just as full contact mixed martial arts tournaments. There are several mixed martial arts tournaments world wide and some actually have a large fan base such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Pride Fighting Championship which draw tens of thousands of spectators at each event.

Smaller shows include the King of the Cage competitions which still draw large crowds and even pay-per-view spots on cable and satellite. Although it does draw large crowds it it still no where near the size of the UFCs or Pride FCs; mostly because of the help of the Gracie family in those two events.

The Gracies are the creators of the UFC which began in 1994 in the United States. They are perhaps the most influential force in MMA within the past 11 years, but their success has been surpassed by newcomers of the sport. The Gracie family is probably their reason for becoming fighters though in some small part.

New names and dynasties in MMA include team Quest led by Randy Couture; the Lion's Den led by the Shamrocks and Guy Mezger; team Milletich led by Pat Milletich, Jeremy Horn, and Matt Hughes; Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell and several other teams in the United States and worldwide.
